19th Century Newspapers Found in Tin box!

The society is delighted to report the recent donation of several very old New York newspapers that were found in a tin box in the attic of a Waukesha house.  The earliest paper dates from 1789 and the others are Civil War era including one about the death of Abraham Lincoln.

After the assassination of her husband and death of her son, Mary Todd Lincoln became mentally unstable and tried many cures for her melancholia.  She arrived in Waukesha on July 6, 1872, and spent a month at the H. M. Hubbard boardinghouse, partaking of Waukesha’s “healing waters”.   After leaving Waukesha, she visited Madison and Baraboo before returning to Illinois. It was said that the box at one-time belonged to a Waukesha woman who helped care for Mrs. Lincoln during her stay there.  Was it Mrs. Hubbard?! The date of the 1789 newspaper leads one to believe that the whole group was brought here from someplace else.  The New York origin points to Hubbard family members who were born in New York.  Coincidentally, the 1789 paper was published the year Mrs. Lincoln’s parents were married in Kentucky.  The mystery continues!

The papers will be on display at the Dousman Stagecoach Inn Museum during Civil War Days Encampment throughout the summer and Fall. Don’t miss this fascinating piece of history!
