Trip Itinerary
Day 1 - October 14, 2012
Bus departs at 8:00 am for Bloomington, Illinois. Bag lunch served on bus. Arrive in Bloomington around Noon. Tour the David Davis Mansion "Clover Lawn", a beautiful mid-Victorian mansion which was the home of David Davis. David Davis was a friend, mentor and campaign manager for Abraham Lincoln. As president, Lincoln appointed Davis as United Supreme Court Justice in 1862.
After completion of the tour, travel to Springfield, Illinois. Check into the Carpenter Street Hotel and eat supper.
At 7:30 pm, assemble and go on a Lincoln's Ghost Walk - Legends and Lore. This 90 minute 10 block walking tour uses Lincoln sites as the backdrop for the strange and ghostly stories about Lincoln's life and death. *This tour is not scary and is suitable for all ages.
Day 2 - October 15, 2012
Eat breakfast at the hotel. At 9 am, tour the Old State Capital State Historic Site. It was here, in the Illinois House chamber, that Lincoln made his famous House Divided Speech in June, 1858.
Then move on to tour the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices. Abraham Lincoln and his law partners rented space in various locations around Springfield. This is the only building among those that is still standing. It was almost new when Lincoln moved into it in 1843 with his second partner, Stephen T. Logan.
Break for lunch. Then at 1:00 pm, tour the Abraham Lincoln Museum and Library, a state of the art facility which opened in 2009. It is designed in a way to be a personal, experiential experience. The powerful exhibits depicts Lincoln's life from Kentucky through his assassination at Ford's Theater. The museum offers a 250 seat holographic theater which brings Lincoln's artifacts to life. This will end our day at 5:00 pm.
Day 3 - October 16, 2012
Eat breakfast at the hotel. At 9:00 am, tour the Lincoln Home National Historic Site and Visitor's Center,a restored four block neighborhood with a Quaker residence - the only home Lincoln ever owned, and the home of the Lincoln family for 17 years. You will enjoy a guided tour of this national treasure conducted by National Park Service Rangers. A tour of Lincoln's home will also be given.
Break for lunch. After lunch, we will tour Lincoln's Tomb. This beautiful monument marks the final resting place of Abraham, Mary Todd, Tad, Eddie and Willie Lincoln. (Oldest son, Robert is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.) The monument was designed by Larkin Mead, completed in 1874, and paid for with public donations. The original receiving vault in which Abraham Lincoln was buried will be seen on a tour of the cemetery.
Day 4 - October 17, 2012
Eat breakfast at the hotel. At 9:00 am, depart for New Salem. It was here that a young Lincoln grew to be a man. This 100 acre living history pioneer village will take you back to Lincoln's life in the 1830's. Timber houses, shops and costumed interpreters playing local villagers allow you to enter the world of Lincoln as a store clerk, village postmaster and student of law.
Day 5 - October 18, 2012
Breakfast at the hotel. At 9:00 am, depart from the hotel to visit Lincoln's Depot. This restored railroad depot, which is near Lincoln's home, is the site where Lincoln gave his "Farewell Address" before departing for Washington, DC on February 11, 1861
After our visit, we will return to Wisconsin.
